Paul Weller is a nice addition, but those headliners are lame.

Other than maybe Thurston Moore, if I was napping on Midge's couch and that fest was going on in the kitchen, I doubt I'd bother to get up.

I'd actually pay to see Shelley and Diggle doing Buzzcocks tunes again, but I'd go see these acts for free:

Paul Weller
The New Pornographers
Bob Mould
Thurston Moore
Clutch

I'm not really a Clutch fan, but I went to school with Neil for a year and remember him being a really good guy. I've always wanted to support his band, but I never actually have supported his band. Oh well.

Die Antwoord? That would be worth it alone.

Other than Weller/Mould/Buzzcocks and DKM this line-up blows big ape chunks-glad I am not missing anything

I met Neil in college too, I remember when the first Clutch single dropped at the college radio station there. Unfortunately, I am also not a big fan.

I would add Rise Against and Social Distortion to your list. And, since I have seen all but Weller at least once already, I don't have to go to this fest.

I am a big Paul Weller fan, but for some reason or another, I have never been able to see him live. I am tempted by this, but I think I would rather take a trip to the UK and see him headline. The new single is decent but not quite as good as the bangers from the last LP.

Lotsa good bands on the Chicago bill, but also lots of shit! Outside of The Cure, I am not sure there is anyone on the bill I have to see that I have not seen at least once already.

Definitely a lot more interesting bands in Chicago but GWAR has to be canceled after Brockie's recent passing. Marky Ramone doing a set w/ Bouncing Souls :?:
And Cerebral Ballzy really seem to get around big gigs. :? Is there some Hollywood/Millionaire nepotism connection with them like The Strokes have :?:

I wasn't planning on going again this year, but that Chicago line-up is surprisingly good.

I think one of the members is the son of one of the members of the early '90s rap group Black Sheep, but otherwise dunno. It is interesting, isn't it? They're opening for OFF! here on Friday night.

I would see the following. In order:

Buzzcocks
Billy Bragg
Naked Raygun
Paul Weller
Descendents
Cheap Trick
Patti Smith
Superchunk (Is Laura still there? If not, scratch them.)
Clutch (Only because I have nice memories of Neil.)
Pussy Riot (Curiosity)
Samhain (Is this like, Glenn Danzig?)

Of all three line-ups, I'd watch The Cure, Jane's Addiction, Samhain, Thurston Moore, and Dum Dum Girls if they were playing at Fort Reno.

No Laura. Jason Narducy is a fine replacement though, I must say.

Nice. Nothing's Shocking would be the Jane's album I'd want to hear. As for Slayer, aren't we all a little Reigning Blooded out at this point? I'd much rather hear one of the first two.

Also, it's time that we acknowledge that we are only a few years away from the rock'n'roll equivalent of Branson, MO.

In the time allotted DESCENDENTS could easily play all of College and Grow Up as well. Depending on how much coffee they have had, they could also squeeze Bonus Fat in!

Maybe if you ask Stephen nicely they can squeeze it in to their PRB set. All 56 seconds of it.

I've been lobbying hard for "Shattered Milo" one more time at PRB and suggested a cover of Teenage Lobotomy would be fun to hear from them.

...however Tempe is soon after Riotfest so maybe it's fresh in their minds for that one. Customer/Tonyage = Greatest show of all time.

No, and also most likely no.

A few Riot Fests ago they did a set where they played Busted at Oz era material and had Santiago on guitar and Camilo on bass. Jim Colao was supposed to play drums but he broke his arm the week of the show so Spicer ended up playing instead.

Here's a look back at the entire history of Riot Fest in Chicago. I put it together as I've shot every single one of them since it started.

I've been pitching for DESCENDENTS to do "Pep Talk" for years. Bill is the holdout and at the Musink Fest Bill took the practical approach before the show and handed me the set list and said ,"OK, what you you suggest we take out in favor of Pep Talk?". Every one I suggested was shot down. If Bill doesn't want to budge he won't.

Good suggestion. What did you suggest that they take out (if you remember)?

Well the thing that Bill can not get around is that "Pep Talk" was originally 2 different songs that somehow got merged into one. Bill and the band knows this, and no one else cares, but he considers it a bit of a hack song because of that. They have not played it once since the 80's and I have been lobbying since 96. "Van" and "All-O-Gistics" are fun for the band to play and very much describe who the band is so that's why they win out over a "hacK" song. It sucks, but trust me there is nothing you can do about it. Oh how I've tried. It's become a bit of a comedy routine with me actually.

my friend has been lobbying that ALL play "Alive," which has gotten the attention of Stephen & Karl on FB, but not Bill.

stay tuned for that one, but yeah, I like the idea of "Pep Talk," but yeah Riot Fest is going to get the honor of "Jean Is Dead" which hasn't been played in a LONG TIME.

it's already fucking here for the most part. i was just talking about this with some friends of mine. i was saying how i was pretty bored by the fact that bands play a whole album straight through at shows now, mostly to get people to come since no one wants to hear their new shit. i said i would at least like to see a band mix up the album in the setlist, since playing it all the way through is like listening to the record for the 1000th time in your house. my friends said they would rather hear it all the way through live instead of being mixed in. i am seeing saint vitus on saturday and they are playing born too late all the way through, but at least they do it backwards. i mind it less with them since it is like a 30 minute album or something but i would rather just hear stuff from all of the records.

I saw the Posies (who I LOVE) do the Frosting on the Beater in its entirety thing and it made it painfully clear that the great songs have remained in their set since the record was released and the mediocre ones have fallen by the wayside for a reason. Let's be honest - the Descendents do most of the great songs from ...College at every show they've played since the beginning of time. I can live without hearing "Statue of Liberty" and "M 16" live, thank you very much.

All feelings for the new wave of this aside, I had heard that right before "New Day Rising" Husker Du toured, playing the entire album all the way through, then doing older stuff. That my friends is genius!
