Underrated players Volume I

DRUMS:
I am starting to completely LOVE Dale Crover. Always respected the guy, but the more I listen to his playing, I realize what a talented dude he really is. Listen to his playing on "The Bloated Pope' from Melvins/Lustmord 'Pigs of the The Roman Empire. You will sprain your brain.

There's plenty good music on that album, noise or otherwise.

Dale has been filling in on drums for OFF!. I wouldn't mind seeing that.

As for underrated players, I'm gonna nominate Tommy Stinson. Everyone talks about his attitude/spirit, but very rarely do people talk about his playing. But listening to TIM again recently made me appreciate what a really melodic, driving bassist he is.

Not sure I'd consider Crover underrated. He's been spoken highly of for as long as I can remember.

I haven't heard too many people raving, but I hope you are right.

Moulty (The Barbarians) - what that drummer does with a hook and 1 hand on "Are you a boy or are you a girl"" is simply barbaric.

As much as I chuckled at your comment (and I did chuckle!) I would be remiss if I didn't point out that Moulty was the drummer for the Barbarians. The New Barbarians was a late 70s coke fueled side project of Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood. Their drummer had two hands.

On that same topic, though Josh Freese improves them and is a great drummer, I have always really liked Chris Mars' playing on Pleased to Meet Me in particular.

That's just about the point they began their slide into absolute irrelevance...

C'mon - half of these guys aren't underrated. Dale Crover and Lucky Lehrer have both been given props for their playing......even Tufty from the Zero Boys to some extent.

Underrated?

How about Michael Giles - drums on the first two King Crimson records. No one knows who he is, but his playing is unearthly.

How about Jerry Penrod - bassist on the first Iron Butterfly record.....playing is totally sick.

In the punk rock world - I'll give you a few Iron City guys......Andy Flag, original bassist in Anti-Flag - totally sick bassist who was also a hoot to watch. I still say they were at their best (and most interesting and creative) when he was in the band. Greg Mairs - drummer for Submachine - total monster. And while we're at it, so is Jeff Cherep (guitarist - also played in Doomwatch)....both of those guys are sick.

I'll also say that the guys in 1.6 Band were mind-blowing - Mike Yanicelli (guitar), Lance Jaeger (bass) & Vin Novara (drums) - all monster players.

If you think Cut and that amazing 1981 BBC session are "irrelevant" then you hear things very differently from the way I do. I'll take the 1st BBC session (their punkest stuff) over the 2nd Lp (which I think is boring, honestly), but not the rest of their stuff.

Cut is okay. If I'd never heard the earlier recordings of those songs (Peel/Y3LP/Punk Rock Movie), I don't think I'd give it a second listen, though.

I haven't listened to the 81 Peel Session in forever, but I remember it being shit, just like their second LP.
