I haven't listened to a full album in several weeks. The last few days I have been trying out a new integrated amp and phono pre amp by listening to a few vinyl tracks by:

The Specials
The Doors
Rolling Stones
Miles Davis
John Coltrane
Duane Allman
Muddy Waters

I have also been streaming via Spotify, Amazon HD, and Sirius XM to see how they sound through the new gear.

Over the next few days, I will spin some punk vinyl to see how that sounds with and without the Schiit Loki.

Neil Young had entered into some agreement with Amazon because he claims their HD streaming is better quality than anyone else offering a similar product. And he really seems to care about such matters.

Yeah, he seems to be really critical about that. At one point, he had his own digital walkman type device because he felt there wasn't a good digital one out there that sounded like analog or something like that. He has a huge archives website with all of his stuff in HD format. I just read somewhere (probably Rolling Stone article about the new archives vol 2) where he changed his thoughts on how he was going to rerelease his archive material.

That’s some seriously choice Japanese hardcore. I was bummed when I found out that Prank reissued Last Chaos on vinyl and I totally missed it. I have the Anarchy, Chaos, and Destruction CD, though, so I didn’t really NEED it.

That CD is seriously difficult to find these days. I just wanted a physical copy, and the vinyl went fast so I grabbed the tape. It was good timing since I recently acquired another tape deck and can play tapes through the stereo again.

I bought the Feral Ward LP reissues of the Death Side stuff a few years ago but wanted digital copies so I bought the FLACs from Qobuz. Unfortunately they are compressed within an inch of their life, just like a lot of newer Japanese hardcore. I'd love to get the original Death Side CDs, but again, hard to find and very expensive these days.

By the way, Prank is going to be pressing more LP copies of the Crow reissue. The packaging will be different and it will be a few months probably.

They also recently reissued one of Totalitar's best albums, but I already have the old Prank CD so I didn't get that one.

Prank is/was a very good label. I hope they get going again with more regular releases.

They repressed the Crow CD not too long ago. I think I had to order it from Japan, though. I’m pretty sure the Death Side CDs were repressed recently, too. I used to buy a lot of Prank stuff, then it seemed like they disappeared for a few years. They were supposedly going to do a Septic Death discography, but it doesn’t seem like that’s ever going to happen.

UPDATE: Record Shop Base has the Crow CD and the Death Side CDs.

UPDATED UPDATE: Looks like those Death Side CDs are the BTR reissues, which are probably as bad or worse than the FLAC files. The recent Rocky & The Sweden CD is loud AF.

Last time I ordered CDs from Japan it was very expensive. I might do an order once a year now if I'm lucky. I haven't heard the recent Rocky and The Sweden album, but the last albums by Nightmare and Forward were brickwalled and compressed badly. I can tolerate it when the music is good, and those albums are, but if there is an older pressing that's within reach price wise, I'd try to get that instead. Unfortunately the early Death Side CDs are HTF and expensive now.

Prank did slow down for a few years. The story I heard was that they got screwed over by their pressing plant (Rainbo - now closed) and it cost them a lot of $$$ to get all their metalwork back from the plant (palettes of it). Then they switched plants (to Bill Smith), only to have that plant close down after a year. Now they are using RTI but their release schedule has slowed a bit for a variety of reasons I'm sure.

My understanding re: the Septic Death release, which was "in the works" 20 years ago, is that the problems and delays have nothing to do with Prank at all, and are entirely the fault of Pushead or whatever ex-members of the band are still alive. I wouldn't count on it happening either.

Prank is worth following on social media or however you want to do it. I suspect they have some good stuff coming eventually.

Ha, yeah. Pulling out some old tapes and a few new ones, though some of the "new" ones are sealed cutouts and NOS from the 80s and 90s. My brother has some more tapes in storage so I asked him to check what he has for me.

I just can't get myself to believe that a cassette sounds better than vinyl. I wouldn't be surprised if a cassette sounds better than a CD though. I have no idea how the Dolby on/off impacts the sound of the cassette though. Would be interested to hear your perspective.

Cassettes are just a fun/nostalgia thing for me. I wouldn't call them hi-fi for the most part. I grew on them and they were my primary format for a number of years. Back when I was a teenager, I used to tape all my vinyl and CDs onto cassette and listen to them through a Walkman.

In terms of a purely technical perspective, both vinyl and cassette tapes are inferior to CD.

RE: Dolby Noise Reduction that stuff is tricky. Dolby B and C will filter out a bit of noise but also make the music sound lifeless in some cases. I've experimented with it but generally don't use it unless I have a pre-recorded tape that was made with it. If I make tapes for other people, I generally leave Dolby off entirely.

Now, another issue with tape is the quality of blank media currently available. Not just to home users but tape duplication factories as well. No one makes type 2 or type 4 tape anymore. If you see anyone selling type 2 or 4 tapes, they are either NOS, or NOS pancake reels put into newer shells. When the latter is done, often times the NOS reels are used to fill lower quality type 1 shells. And then there is the issue of how the pancake reels were stored over the years - sometimes they are screwed up from that. You can buy type 2 blanks on eBay all day but they usually start at $5 a pop and can easily go up to the $10-20 each range depending on the brand/model. Type 1 blanks for consumers are still available, but starting to dry up, and the prices are rising.

Noooooo, but this recent re-listen convinced me it's not nearly the huge drop-off in quality I always thought it was. It's more of a Van Halen to Van Halen II drop in quality.

I just listened to the first pressing of Husker Du's "Eight Miles High" 7" about nine times in a row. That fucking song hits me so hard when Bob is just wailing. I couldn't wait till it was over so I could pick up the needle, which doesn't make sense, but it does.
