That plant cannot seem press a centered LP to save their lives, and their records often have other defects also. So all the money spent on mastering is potentially going down the crapper here.

version sound wrote:The VMP pressing is technically a FP pressing. VMP is selling a white vinyl pressing of LGM. Seems unlikely that it is a different white vinyl pressing than the one FP themselves are selling. So maybe FP is using a better plant or this “VMP” version is going to be just as crappy as the FP version that is $7 less (for non-members, only $3 less than the member price).
The VMP LAGWAFIS was mastered at Alchemy and pressed at GZ. The new LGM is also being advertised as mastered at Alchemy, so maybe also pressed at GZ?

I was talking about LGM:

FWIW, the FP pressing of Teenage Snuff Film got mostly good reviews on Discogs.

I saw the 2nd night of that (the Saturday show); were we at the same one? Very memorable/great show for me as well.

I saw the last night. Thom Yorke kept saying how happy they were that the tour was finally over. They played for a while though......we scalped 3rd row seats outside for $100. now its $300 just to get in the building when they play.

100% agree, but I feel like I got lucky overall. The only other option (on vinyl, I’ve had the CD since it came out) is a very pricey original. Sadly, this pressing is currently the best available option. I’ll buy Pure Phase. I’m not sure I’ll bother with LAGWAFIS. I already have a few different versions on CD, and it’s my least favorite of the original three, so I don’t know if I need a sketchy copy on vinyl.
version sound wrote:Good plan. I might forgo the colored vinyl and just buy black from Amazon so I can return it if there’s an issue. I did read that someone complained to Fat Possum about the warped copy they received and got a refund (without having to send it back). My copy is fully playable and sounds good. I’m not jazzed about the warp on the A side, but it tracks and doesn’t affect the sound, so I can live with it. You’d think that FP would put some focus on pressing quality, since they own the damn pressing plant, but maybe it doesn’t affect them much overall.
version sound wrote:So, Pure Phase is up for pre-order now, and I ordered the glow in the dark vinyl, like a sucker. It’s my favorite Spiritualized record, and FP will definitely hear from me if there are any issues with this one. So much for doing the rational thing...

VS, here's the bad news about Glow In the Dark vinyl. It is not like regular colored vinyl, usually. A powder has to be added to the vinyl mix in order to give that effect. That powder will make the record noisier than a regular record. I never buy GITD LPs for that reason.
It's possible FP is doing something different here, but I would also doubt that. Usually labels, even normal ones, will give a warning about purchasing GITD records, and say that the record is basically a collectible and not meant for optimal sound quality.

version sound wrote:The reissue Yes L.A. definitely isn’t glow in the dark, and I’ve never heard that the original is either. I believe it’s just clear vinyl with music on one side and screen printing on the other.
There was no warning about the GITD vinyl on the FP site or at VMP, who is also selling it. Maybe I’ll ask them about it. I want something that sounds good, not just something that looks good, so I’ll cancel that one if that is the case. The new sleeve looks like shit. I know it’s supposed to look like the GITD box the OG was packaged in, but it just looks like Gatorade.
version sound wrote:I wrote to FP to ask about the GITD vinyl. Got no response. Cancelled my order. One of my local shops had LGM on white for less than I paid for it (with shipping), so I might just buy PP (on black) in-store.
version sound wrote:So, I’m listening to this thing right now, and as far as I can tell, it sounds pretty great. My goddamn amplifier is completely out in the right channel, so I’m basically just hearing the left channel mono mix. There is a light crackle between tracks, presumably from the stuff used to make it glow in the dark, but it’s very quiet, and you absolutely can’t hear any noise when the music is actually playing. No surface noise, tics, skips, or other issues so far. Hopefully LAGWAFIS will also be pressed at GZ, cuz I don’t really feel like dropping $43 on the VMP.
version sound wrote:According to Discogs, it was mastered by Chris Blair, if that’s what you’re looking for. If not, I can check the dead wax when I get home.
