Sci Fi/Horror recommendations

I work from home so I get to watch movies all day. (*** I did not say that on record. LOL :? )

Streaming services have way too many modern horror films and a tremendous amount seem to suck, so I'm looking for films that look a bit more cerebral than slasher.

So far recently....
Ad-Astra (2019) disappointing.
Event Horizon (1997) Not bad at all.
Wanda Vision - Rather enjoyable and I'm not a MCU dude.
Apostle (with Michael Sheen) VERY VERY good.
Penny Dreadful - Very good

What else is really good?

PS: Guilty pleasures are the Resident Evil and Underworld series. Not apologizing for loving these.

Are you looking for something specifically geared toward old white guys, or are you open to less racist content?

LOL!

Not quite horror, more thriller but enjoyed that movie on Netlix "The Woman in the Window" starring Amy Adams

Some decent good modern horror/suspense films I think easily stand with the classics of the Golden Age of late 70s and early 80s horror... my tastes in the genre tend to run toward the sleazy/exploitation/grindhouse/Fangoria end of things, so if you're looking for "brooding and atmospheric psychological explorations of the ramifications of grief" or some other critical film-school-reviewer bilge & jargon, then some of these are probably not for you... Although It follows and Annihilation are probably more in the slow-burn/cerebral vein ... but if you also like lots of gore and nihilistic themes and imagery, then i'm your Huckleberry.

I loved Mandy. I'll throw my two cents in for Possessor, also starring Andrea Riseborough, and directed by Brandon Cronenberg.

jaybird - have you ever seen LAST HOUSE ON DEAD END STREET? A real piece of no-budget trash that is completely fascinating.

Oh yeah, classic. Something about the whole aesthetic of those no-budget 70s horror films that just cannot ever be truly replicated.... plus, all the real-life war-zone/ISIS/Cartel shit you can see on the internet now kinda makes that whole school of low-budget/no-plot intense realistic gore pretty much irrelevant.

I only really watch horror movies from the 60's these days. Sometimes early 70's and 50's. Hammer and Attica production stuff is my favorite (the old Christopher Lee/Peter Cushing movies). Not even remotely scary. But I love the atmosphere. As far as modern stuff, I thought Goodnight Mommy, Brightburn, and Let The Right One In were all totally cool and interesting.

I really liked SAINT MAUD (available on Amazon Prime). Psychological horror. Some nice scares, well made, just enough going on to sustain 85 minutes and be done.

Not a movie, but if you are looking to read some great sci-fi, I strongly recommend the Broken Earth Trilogy by NK Jemisen

Been meaning to get to this one for awhile... I also liked Midsommar quite a bit... good update on the 70s mini-horror genre of wacky pagan human-sacrifice cults ala Wicker Man

Meh. I wanted to like it. Didn't 'wow' me the first time around.

Season 2 of LOVE, DEATH and ROBOTS on Netflix is a big win.

Art and Graphics pretty cutting edge. The stories are all short and pretty entertaining (10 to 15 mins each) to match my decreasing attention span. I like it.

It was good. I liked all but one story. The Giant story at the end was one of the most beautifully written things I’ve ever seen on television.
Have you checked out electric dreams? It was Amazon primes answer to black mirror. But all based on Philip k dick stories. Also very good.

That was a very impressive short. Gulliver's Travels redux. I liked it plenty.

Also like "Three Robots" with the cats. Finished off Season 2 last night.

Now I'm waiting for Season 4 of Ozark and hoping that Black Mirror gets renewed.

Electric Dreams
'A sci-fi anthology series with stand-alone episodes based on the works of Philip K. Dick.'

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5711280/?ref_=ttep_ep_tt

Yeah, this is REALLY good so far. Dude was pretty genius.

The scariest thing I have seen in a long time is called The Red Sox Pitching Staff staring Matt Barnes.

They are getting killed regularly.

Cowboy BeBop. Netflix.
VERY strong opening episode. Mashup of all the good things about Matrix, Stargate, Robert Rodriguez and anime mixed with a lot of "psychedelics".

Torchwood.
Made it through half way through the first season. Some episodes marginally better than others.
