Comin' at it from a late seventies to mid-eighties perspective, this would be my list:

Shit, yeah, sorry. They're RVA peoples. THat record's on a DC label though. And the band had strong DC connections.

All I know about them is that they released a record or two on Zero Degree, which was the same label that put out the White Cross records.

Zero Degree was their label...well, actually it was L'Amour's label, but L'Amour mutated into the Beex, so no difference. The Beex were always making treks up to DC and Baltimore to play with bands like the Slickee Boys, Penetrators, and Tru Fax, and managed to get quite a bit of DC press. I think (but could be mistaken) that there was Beex coverage in every single issue of the Infiltrator...

I always forget that one exists. I don't even remember if I still own it or not. |
This record was one of my white whales for a long time until Dischord reissued it along with one of the early 7"s as a CD back in 2002 or so. I only knew one person who had a copy and he never managed to get me a tape of it or anything, so I'd never even heard it before. I like it, but it's disappointing compared to any of their Dischord stuff. Then again, had I heard it when I was a teenager instead of my late 20s, I might've liked it more.

I've still never heard it. I kinda assumed it wouldn't be as full developed as "Funeral At The Movies" or "Ten Spot"

It's not and that's why it's nowhere near as good, but it's definitely a bit more developed than their earliest recordings (demo and 1st 7"). There's one song that appeared on State of the Union ("Let it Ring") and it along with "Take the Child" are by far the best songs on there. I found it odd that Dischord didn't put the songs from 2nd 7" on the reissue as it has an exclusive B-side (which is just OK) and a version of "Vacation Brain" that's different from the Ten Spot one IIRC.

For my money, STT were the best band in DC from '88 to '91. It all went to shit when Chris left.

I like the post-Chris/Mike stuff more than you do, but I agree that they never topped Ten Spot and Funeral at the Movies.
