Kim Gordon's songs can easily be the best or worst song on any Sonic Youth record. Which is best and which is worst, IYHO?
Best: "Beauty Lies"
Worst: "Contre le Sexisme" _________________ It's not coming back, so let it go |

There used to be a brilliant video someone had made with clips from Twin Peaks to "Shadow of a Doubt." It was awesome and super creepy, but I cant find it anymore. It beat the pants off of Kim riding around on a train.
Anywho, "Shadow" is my fave. I dont really care about trying to figure out the worst. _________________ Speaking of mothers, let me give that oatmeal some brown sugar. |

I can't think of a Kim song I really dislike, though. She gets a lot of flak from SY fans and I've never understood it and in particular for that song above. I have a good friend who was a HUGE SY fan and when he first heard that opening track on A Thousand Leaves, he disliked that song so much that he never bought another one of their records again. I've been trying to get him back in the fold for years now by convincing him that their last 3 records are all great, but I don't think he's taken the plunge yet. What is it about this song that's not just bad to some, but so off-putting? I don't get it. _________________

Really? How hard is it to understand? She can't actually sing, so whether her voice really works or not depends heavily on the conext. A song with uninteresting music and stupid lyrics, combined with her weak voice = a crappy song. _________________ It's not coming back, so let it go |

Big f'n' deal. Most hardcore/punk singers can't really sing either or maybe they're not traditional "singers" but good vocalists for the songs they're trying to get across. In short, I've never had a problem with her vocals. I would expect SY fans to be more open-minded about that sort of thing. _________________

What a load of nonsense. Even good singers can sing shitty songs. Are you claiming that Kim's managed to completely avoid it for 30+ years? If so, you either need your hearing checked or you are full of it. _________________ It's not coming back, so let it go |

No, but I just don't think that "Contre' de Sexism" is THAT bad. It's not one of their best for sure, but it's just OK to my ears, not the worst thing ever. That's all. _________________

"Worst thing ever", in the context of Sonic Youth songs, is obviously relative. I don't hate it, but I could live without hearing it again. _________________ It's not coming back, so let it go |

Also, call me sexist, but crappy male voices usually work better than crappy female voices. Kim is the only one I can think of who actually makes it work (most of the time). _________________ It's not coming back, so let it go |

My top 10 from the other thread:
Hyperstation - Thurston
The Sprawl - Kim
Schizophrenia - Kim/Thurston
Cotton Crown - Kim/Thurston
Pacific Coast Highway - Kim
Shadow of a Doubt - Kim
Halloween - Kim
I'm Insane - Thurston
Expressway to Yr Skull - Thurston
Cinderella's Big Score - Kim
So she sings lead or co-lead on 7 out of 10. Pretty good average, especially when you consider that she usually only sings on 2-3 songs per record. And to think that JGJR was trying to paint me as a hater... _________________ It's not coming back, so let it go |

Like I said, I like all his songs, they just don't make the top 10. They'd definitely make the top 20. Have you heard the new song from his upcoming solo record?

I'll check the record out, but I can't say I'm too impressed by this song. It's a little too "straight" to be coming from Lee Renaldo, IMO. _________________ It's not coming back, so let it go |

Craziness. He always has some of the best songs on many of SY's records. From my list in another thread.
Rain on Tin - Thurston
Flower - Kim
Eric's Trip - Lee
Tom Violence - Thurston
Incinerate - Thurston
Shadow of a Doubt - Kim
(I Got a) Catholic Block - Thurston
Silver Rocket - Thurston
Mote - Lee
Walkin Blue - Lee
That's a .300 batting average and for a member who only gets 1-2 songs per record, that's pretty great IMO. With that said, I think the folks who REALLY champion Lee (like saying he should sing more on their records, etc.) are like those who prefer the Keith-sung tunes to the Mick ones (or those who prefer Colin Moulding to Andy Partridge). What makes those songs special, in part, is that since he only gets 1-2 songs per album, he typically submits a really good one and you don't have to hear the 5-6 lesser ones. _________________

I think Lee SHOULD sing more though. Not equal to the others but maybe 3-4 songs instead of 1-2.

Technically since Dirty was the first album I ever heard of theirs...and this is track 2 on the album....and track 1 is a Thurston song...this is the first Kim song I ever heard. At the time I didn't know they had more than one singer because at that point I was like 11 years old. I remember just thinking the singer was doing something "different" with his voice. I couldn't remember. I really thought it was B2M. Sorry! I have a kinda sorta similar story except that I didn't do the tape destruction. I lent my copy of Fugazi's Steady of Diet (official store bought cassette copy) to my friend Norm in 11th grade. He used to fight his older brother a lot and one day they were arguing and his brother took the tape (which was on his nightstand), I think and tried to smash it. Norm apologized for the incident, but due to that and other incidents (like me inadvertently breaking Norm's bedroom window around that time while throwing a small rock to see if he was around, so I guess we were even; ha ha), I've only begrudgingly gotten along with his brother over the years. Thankfully, as adults they have a much better sibling relationship, though.
As a post-script to this story, I got the cassette back and though it looked smashed up, it was still intact and it still played (amazingly!). I still have it! _________________

Best - I can't say; there are a lot I REALLY REALLY love with her singing, the top for me: "PCH," "Shadow Of A Doubt," "Beauty Lies," "Becuz"!!! "Brave Men Run," "Making The Nature Scene," "Flower," "Swimsuit Issue," "Shaking Hell," "Kissablility," "Orange Rolls" - damn "Cinderella's Big Score...
Worst? A couple that come to mind are on everyone's favorite 'Experimental Jet Set, Trash And No Star': "Bone" or "Doctor's Orders"? I can't decided. _________________ When your number's up be what you are |

Completely ridiculous song, but I love it anyway. Was she actually trying to draw a connection between the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue and sexual harassment? What a quaint world we lived in before the internet age... |
I mentioned this song in the ones I like a lot because I do and I put it on one of the comps I made with my boy and he just laughs when we put it on. As a girl, I just think it's drawing the lines between females seen as objects for male pleasure and nothing more. But what do I know _________________ When your number's up be what you are |

I know, but it's hard to take lines like "I ain't givin' you head in a Sunset bungalow" too seriously. Also, the Swimsuit Issue seems quaint compared to the stuff that's readily available on the internet these days. Sure, those highly paid models are there only to be objectified, but at least they aren't being smacked or choked... _________________ It's not coming back, so let it go |

Also, though, sometimes her lyrics are just weird anyway, like, sometimes they sound stupid...! _________________ When your number's up be what you are |

I also can't see him being a SY fan from everything you've told me about his musical taste, so he must cover his ears or something. _________________

I got it on vinyl yesterday, but still haven't even had a chance to unseal it yet. I am, however, listening to it on Spotify right now and it's really f'n' good on 1st listen. _________________

I'll have to check it out. I looked on Spotify yesterday since it was the release date and all I saw on there was the single. I'll check again! If I like and get credit at Siren again I'll prob buy. _________________ Greg Polard (in cursive) |

Yes. They also have a record label and they just put out one of my favorite records of the year so far:

Spotify is weird with new releases. Sometimes they have it right on the date but others it's the next day (who cares, I know). I was looking for the new SHARKS album yesterday (got the vinyl but wanted to avoid using the DL link if I could until I get a new computer) and it wasn't there but just looked now and it is. _________________ Greg Polard (in cursive) |

Man... I have one of his older ones like early '90s or something but I don't know where it is now!!! And I can't recall the name. Damn it was like an EP. Sorry, not too informative post!!!! _________________ When your number's up be what you are |

You did tell me that he got you into The Bats (who I love, as you know), but I didn't realize that he got you into The Dentists as well (no surprise given that he likes The Bats).
I'd figure Treepeople to be more your thing, though, as you said he doesn't really go for early '90s grunge-y/Sub Pop/eMpty type stuff. FWIW, I saw Treepeople in my friends' basement in New Brunswick (it was the same house where guys from Deadguy and some other folks I know lived) in the fall of '93. I saw Samiam there around the same time, too. Honestly both of them were kinda boring (and Martsch continues to have a reputation as boring live in Built to Spill). Samiam were great on record back then, though. They saw them at City Gardens and convinced them to play their basement! I never knew that until my friend Andy posted that on FB a few months ago. _________________

We actually almost went up to the art museum there a few weeks ago, but decided against it because the exhibits weren't really up our alley. One day, though... _________________
